Development

I have tried to write a report/overview of the development of the pups up to their 8th week, for the ones interested.

Anouk's 2nd litter was born on April 2nd 2005. Out of the 7 pups, 6 survived, 3 boys en 3 girls. Baukje, the 4th girl, died when she was two days old. This time, the whelping wasn't as exhausting for Anouk as it was the first time.
The pups are really doing well and after one week, half of them already weighed more than a 1000 grams.

The sixpack opened their eyes in the second week op the 12th of April and as of the 16th of April they could hear. After this they tried to walk and were very busy practising that. Berry crawled out of the whelping box on April the 17th, all on his own, and went to look for Anouk, who was next to the whelping box.

The first day of week 4, the pups got introduced to milk. At first, they didn't understand what to do with it, but that got better with a little help. The second day, they knew what they were meant to do, but if Anouk would be around, they would prefer her milk.

The pups got there second worm treatment in the beginning of week 5. They could walk very well already and they would hurt eachother quite a bit with their sharp teeth. They weighed 3,5 kilograms on average.

In the 6th week, the pups were very lively and they ate solid food. After they ate, they would go outside to relieve themselves and would run and play after that.

In the beginning of the 7th week, the pups met their half-sister Aagje. Anouk didn't mind Aagje being with the pups, but she did mind that Aagje tried to take her ball of her. The pups then ate solid food and would become "wolves" when getting meat for dinner. Balou weighed almost 6 kilograms and the others were over 5 kilograms.

In week 8, the pups had a lot of impressions to process and deal with. They developed themselves as little “persons”.
On Sunday May 22nd, Jacqueline Schoenmaker did a puppytest. This took place in an unknown environment, for the first time without their brothers and sisters and known people. From a distance, without the pups being able to hear or see us, we watched and were fascinated by the way Jacqueline done the tests. The pups passed the puppytest with a good result. The puppytest is advised for anyone to get an even better look on the characters of the pups and of course, for the future combination with the new owners.
If you would like your pup to undergo a puppytest, you can contact Jacqueline Schoenmaker via email : jjschoenmaker@hetnet.nl

Week 8 went fast and the pups behaved perfectly. They were able to receive many impressions, out on the street, on the field and in the house. The girls weighed an average of 7,5 kilograms and the boys were around 8,5 kilograms. On Saturday the 28th of May at 08.40 hours, the new owner of Babette (Loeka) came to pick her up. After that Bea (Beau) got picked up and then Berry (Bertus). A few days later, on May 31st, Balou (Chouffe), at that time weighing 9,4 kilograms, went to her new owner. After that, it was very quiet although Bert and Brana were still here. Bert (Max) was picked up by his new owners on the 4th of June. Brana wasn't too happy with that and being alone at night was even less. The last two weeks, Anouk wasn't too bothered with the pups anymore. She could still go to them, but she would find a place for herself where she could be on her own. Now and again she would stop the pups from being too wild. Playing with her 6 puppies usually ended in growling, because she didn't like it very much when her legs were used as bones. When only Bert and Brana were still with her, she played more with them. Brana went to her new owner in the 10th week which gave us the chance to enjoy this great litter a little longer.

On August the 9th of 2005 we went to Eersel with all the puppies for their Pennhip. I would like to thank the new owners for the fact that they all wanted to cooperate and rescheduled other appointments to be there. It was very nice to see them all at the same time and the puppies liked that too.
Some of them didn't like the IV and they made sure that they were heard. Then came the moment of truth, it's always thrilling to find out if the hips are good or bad. As a breeder you do everything you can, but you never know if the results are that what you expect. The "overview x-rays" were all excellent and Maarten Kappen thought that the DI-measurements would be close together, in a positive sense of speaking. One or two dogs could have hips with a little more laxity. He thought we could be pleased with the results, because it wasn't always the case that the results from one litter would be that close together. Then the long wait for the definitive results began. It seemed to me that those weeks took a lot longer than they did.
Eventually the results of the DI measurements came: Chouffe 0,25 - 0,21; Loeka 0,48 - 0,52; Bertus 0,26 - 0,30; Brana 0,31 - 0,31; Beau 0,25 - 0,28 and Max 0,32 - 0,29. As a breeder you can be proud with those results in my opinion, and of course, I am proud, but it would have been better if Loeka's results would have been around 0,30. After that I spoke to Maarten Kappen on the telephone and asked him if growing pains could have been of any influence. Loeka did have a lot of growing pains. Kappen couldn't say if this really was of any influence but it could be possible that the dog would spare itself and because of that, the muscles were less developed. He was very curious to see if there would be any improvent when the dog would get Pennhip x-rays taken on a later age, after a good while of being without growing pains. We discussed this with the owners of Loeka and we agreed on doing the Pennhip again at the age of around 1,5 years. We will let Kappen as well as you, know, if the growing pains indeed were of influence.
